The shirt constituted a second skin, whose original prime function was to protect the precious upper garments against perspiration and body odours, and soft skin against coarse textiles, rather than protecting the body against the cold. This latter function has been fulfilled by the undershirt from the 19th century onwards.

Divided shirt cuffs are of three kinds, depending on how they fasten: Button cuffs, also called barrel cuffs, have buttonholes on the one side and buttons on the other. Link cuffs, which have buttonholes on both sides and are meant to be closed with cufflinks or silk knots. Convertible cuffs may be closed with buttons or with cufflinks.

The original purpose of cuffs was to protect the material from fraying and, when frayed, allowed the cuffs to be repaired or replaced without major changes to the garment.

Dress: Cuffs

Shirt cuffs often come with two buttons or two buttonholes for closing the sleeve. The difference in size is in place to allow for a man to wear a watch and for his shirt sleeve to slide over his watch with catching.

The ideal shirt cuff should be visible half an inch or one cm below the jacket sleeve.

There is also a convertible shirt cuff allows the man to wear his shirt buttoned up, or worn with cufflinks. The absence of the fold in the cuff will highlight to the discerning eye, that it an imitation cuff and therefore is not ideally suited to a man who wishes to wear and impress with his outfit and his cufflinks.

Your shirt sleeve should reach your knuckles when unbuttoned. This will ensure it is long enough to reveal your shirt sleeve under your jacket and not so long that it dangles over your hand.

Many cuffs also come in both single or double button combinations. The extra buttons are a personality design and will have less impact on your physical appearance, so if the cuff is ideal for you in a single button formation, it will also be ideal for you in the double button formation.
