A pleat's function is to provide extra comfort when you sit or place your hands in your pockets. Traditionally, men wore trousers with forward pleats. After WWII, plain fronts, modelled after Army issue trousers, became fashionable. Today's preference is for slimmer styles and this has led to a reduction in pleated trousers. Trousers are pleated, pants are flat fronted garments.

Pleats can either face forwards or be reversed. Reverse pleats face the hips and pockets, while the forward pleat brings the eye in towards the centre or the fly. The British style generally favors forward pleats whereas pants in a Neapolitan Italian, usually face outward. In terms of which is better, forward pleats usually receive less criticism as they tend to remain flat, while outward ones may open and stay open, resulting in ballooning fabric. The number of pleats that you have can vary: usually, one or two, though some men have experimented with three and even four pleats.
